Concussion

A more accurate, comprehensive concussion diagnosis can pave the way for the right treatment and improved quality of life.

Concussion is the the most common type of traumatic brain injury (TBI). After a concussion or mild head injury, the brain will often heal on its own. However, symptoms can persist following even a mild concussion, whiplash or blow to the head. Concussion symptoms can include:

  • Memory issues
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness or loss of balance
  • Fatigue or drowsiness
  • Nausea with or without vomiting
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Trouble speaking
  • Dilation of one or both pupils
  • Loss of coordination or impaired motor skills
  • Nervousness
  • Irritability

Symptoms that persist for weeks, months or longer after a concussion are associated with persistent post-concussion syndrome (PPCS), also called post-concussion syndrome (PCS) or postconcussive syndrome.

Without a comprehensive neurodiagnostic evaluation that includes functional brain imaging, concussions can be difficult to accurately diagnose. Mild to moderate TBIs are often:

  • Misdiagnosed: Concussion symptoms overlap symptoms of other brain conditions,
  • Undiagnosed: Traditional imaging (MRI and CT scans) cannot “see” mild TBIs, or
  • Overlooked: Disbelief or lack of awareness that a mild head injury can lead to significant symptoms.
