We tend to think of concussions as acute events and the most common type of traumatic brain injury (TBI). It is most often caused by a sudden direct blow or bump to the head that disrupts the way the brain normally functions.
It is important to note that a concussion can occur even if there is no loss of consciousness. The brain does not necessarily fit tightly inside the skull, and sometimes a “slosh effect” occurs when the head hits a hard object and the brain moves quickly against the bony structures inside the skull. This is frequently what happens to athletes who suffer concussions playing football, soccer, basketball, and other sports.
After an acute concussion, the brain will often heal on its own. However, some people experience persistent symptoms from a concussion, or a series of concussions long after and may end up with a mild to moderate TBI also called Persistent Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCCS).
